2011’s a winner in WA!

Tasting Panel member Dave Mavor has been busy in recent months sourcing some of Western Australia’s finest wines for your enjoyment. While he was there, Dave was absolutely blown away by the quality of the 2011 vintage, making it six stellar vintages in a row for Margaret River and Great Southern.

Here’s what Dave Mavor had to say: “While rain and cool weather caused havoc with slow ripening and disease pressure in Victoria and South Australia, the sun continued to shine in WA.

“In fact, the summer was quite hot and dry, leading to an early start and quick finish to a low yielding harvest of concentrated fruit, particularly in Margaret River.

“This follows on from a long run of outstanding vintages over the past decade, with the very cool 2006 vintage being the only weak link, although some outstanding whites were made even then.”

If you’d like to sample some stunning products of the 2011 vintage keep an eye out for the following names: Barwick, Clairault, Deep Woods, Hamelin Bay and Redgate from Margaret River and Alkoomi, Ferngrove, Forest Hill, West Cape Howe and Wignalls from Great Southern.

It’s with great excitement that we announce a revamp of wineselectors.com.au Browsing the site you’ll notice a raft of changes that make your experience with Wine Selectors even smoother than usual.

The new menu across the top of the homepage makes searching for wines a breeze. Choose from the red, white or mixed options or if you know how much you’d like to spend, you can search via price as well. Or perhaps you’d prefer to search via region. No problem, it’s all there at your fingertips.

Expand your white horizons

While we all have our favourite white varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, there are some new white kids on the block who are just waiting to win over your palate.

Roussanne: this variety originated in the northern Rhône Valley region of France and is fairly rare in Australia. You might have come across it blended with Marsanne to which it adds aromatics and elegance.

One of the Tasting Panel’s favourite Roussanne is the 2009 from Belgravia, which they describe as having delicate, floral aromas that are typical of French Roussanne. Its palate has a lovely texture and shows rich honey and pear flavours balanced by vibrant, cool-climate acidity. Click here to try this Roussanne as part of a mixed pack today!

Savagnin: is native to the Jura region in Eastern France. It can be made into a very nice sherry style of wine but as a table wine it is very textural (like most European wines) with a savoury richness, aromas of grilled nuts, stonefruit and dusty honey. In Australia this grape was known as the Spanish variety Albarino until it was later identified as Savagnin. A Panel favourite is the 2010 from Angullong. Alluring with passionfruit and honeydew melon aromas, it shows tangy tropical fruit with a herbaceous twist. Click here to try this Savagnin as part of a mixed pack today!

Gargenaga: is a white variety native to North East Italy and is the main variety used to make their well known wine ‘Soave.’ It is very rare in Australia but when made well produces a quite neutral yet textural white wine with a slightly earthy, savoury complexity. Domain Day wines in the Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s only Gargenaga producers. Their 2009 is loved by the Panel with its tangy acidity and spicy, mineral characters, making it great with light foods and an ideal aperitif style.
