If you were to list the top names in Australian winemaking, fighting for one of the top spots would have to be Peter Lehmann. The country’s most influential wine critic James Halliday had this to say of him, “It’s not often a person becomes a legend in their own lifetime.” He’s also the first Australian wine industry figure to be named a Member of the Order of Australia.
The first fact that makes Peter Lehmann such a legend is his immense talent as a winemaker. From the start he’s been crafting wines of incredible quality and some of the Shiraz he produced at Saltram in the 1960s are still regarded as some of the Barossa’s finest.
Then there’s his absolute dedication to and faith in the Barossa and its people. When times were tough in the 1970s he stood by the grape growers of the region and his loyalty has been repaid through their unfaltering support of Peter Lehmann Wines.
The company’s staff have also always been incredibly loyal and from the beginning there has only been one Chief Winemaker: Andrew Wigan. His employment in 1976 has been described by Peter Lehmann as “the best decision he ever made” and the wealth of awards under Andrew’s belt are testimony to that belief.
You can experience the passion, dedication and expertise of Peter Lehmann Wines in June’s Wine of the Month – the Peter Lehmann Tempranillo 2006. Jam packed with lifted dark berry, herb, spice and leather aromas, this savoury Spanish variety is juicy and long with firm tannins: the perfect match for chocolate fondant with mandarin and ice-cream.
