McLaren Vale, SA
While the nearby Barossa Valley was established by German immigrants around 1837, it was the English who started the viticulture and winemaking industries in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. John Reynell produced South Australia’s first commercial vintage in 1844, using grapes grown in the southern vales. Great industry names such as Hardy, Hamilton and Osborne followed Reynell’s example by establishing their vineyards in the south. Some of these original vineyards, now more than 100 years old, are still producing premium wines.
