Tasmanian wines share an elegance with the wines of Europe because the climate is similar, i.e. mild summers and long autumn days that ensure grapes ripen slowly. The most famous wine route is the Tamar Valley, located north of Launceston along both sides of the Tamar River and north-east to Pipers River. From Hobart, the southern wine region enables you to explore the Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys. Then on the way to Cradle Mountain there are the north-western vineyards while the route to Freycinet and Wineglass Bay reveals more boutique treasures. Tasmania has developed an enviable reputation for Sparkling wines, so much so that it’s become the go-to state for some of Australia’s best Sparkling producers to source their fruit.
