Sparkling Wine in Australia

Australian Sparkling can very happily hold its head up high with a reputation that can match the best of Champagne. Thanks to the championing of regions like Tasmania and Tumbarumba, we are starting to see examples that express purity of fruit and clever winemaking decisions. The only reason Sparkling is not labelled Champagne is because it does not hail from the famed region in France, although it goes through the same winemaking process and uses the three mainstay varieties:
Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Types of Sparkling wine

In Australia, Sparkling white wine is most commonly made using Chardonnay grapes to create bubbly that’s medium-bodied and dry, often possessing fruit-forward flavours of peach, apple, grapefruit and melon. Tasmania and the Yarra Valley are championing Sparkling whites with international award-winning examples coming out of both regions.

Shiraz is by far the most widely made Sparkling red variety in Australia. However, Merlot, Durif and Cabernet Sauvignon are all on the rise. Unlike traditional red wine, Sparkling reds are quite refreshing when served chilled.

The most famous of Italy’s Sparkling wines, Prosecco takes its name from a village in the north of the country, and it’s close to overtaking Champagne as the world’s most loved Sparkling wine. Prosecco comes from the Glera grape, and is made using secondary fermentation and is bottled under pressure. This results in a lower alcohol wine driven by bright fruit and acidity rather than the savouriness of Champagne.

Sparkling Rosés can have all the texture and complexity of a white Sparkling wine, with the added dimension of a fun colour and fine texture for bonus deliciousness!

Sparkling Wine Glasses

For Sparkling wines, there are two types of glasses that enhance the wine in different ways.

The familiar flute shape allows the bubbles to gather at the bottom of the glass then shoot up to the top, capturing the aromas and flavours and presenting a stunning display of sparkles.

Or if you're enjoying a Sparkling wine with a bit of age or complexity, the tulip shaped glass still gives you bubbles, but also allows more air to hit the wine and really open up the aromas and flavours.

How many calories are there in a glass of Sparkling wine?

There are about 118-120 calories in a glass of Sparkling wines.
