An increasing number of Australian producers are throwing away their fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides to make organic wines. These wines all impressed the Wine Selectors Tasting Panel and have the added bonus of being environmentally sustainable.
For a wine to have organic and/or biodynamic certification it has to meet a stringent set of criteria and you can read all about what’s involved in this Selector article. One of the most important things to remember, however, is organic wine is not necessarily preservative free. Under Australian certification, winemakers can add about 50% of the amount of preservative allowed under conventional food standards, and even if no preservative is added, sulphur dioxide can also be a natural product of fermentation so may be present, even if it hasn’t been deliberately added. You’ll find the details of added preservatives on the individual wine labels.
So browse the collection, add a few to your cart and relax knowing that the environment thanks you for your choice.
