We are a family-owned business and all wines are dry grown, nurtured and bottled on the estate. Established by Ian Tyrer (1946 - 2003) Galafrey has continued to prosper under the management of mother and daughter team, Linda and Kim Tyrer and with Kim's Husband Nigel Rowe, who maintain a hands-on role to ensure that the Galafrey philosophy lives on. That is to strive for excellence in producing small parcels of distinctive and consistently exceptional wines through commitment to producing fruit of the highest quality which we believe is the key to great winemaking.
How long have you been in the wine business?
Galafrey is 38 years old and one of the oldest wineries in the Mount Barker Area. We are second generation winemakers, as well as pioneers in the Great Southern area of Western Australia.
What is dry grown?
If you enjoy powerful red wine with mega flavour then you will love wine that is dry grown. If you have not yet experienced this sublime pleasure then welcome to an amazing new world that is hard to return from. Once sampled dry grown wines are never forgotten and though a rare in this commercial climate, a select few wineries in WA use this fruit mainly due to cost. Basically it means non irrigated which means you get small yields, small berries but each one is a power pack of flavour. Think of it like supermarket tomatoes against one of those beautiful home grown tomatoes, one full of flavour!
