Lou, his wife Valerie and their daughters Lisa and Victoria produce premium quality wines under the Leone and Lou Miranda Estate brands using fruit from their Barossa Valley vineyards.
Our wines range from Sparklings with the finest fizz, to crisp whites, to rich reds – including our famous Old Vine Shiraz – to deliciously sticky dessert and fortified wines.
And in one-way or another, our family has been working on these wines for more than 70 years.
It started when our nonno, Francesco Miranda came to Australia in 1938. The one thing he knew from his Southern Italian upbringing was that good wine was as important as a loving family and close friends. He arrived in Griffith, NSW, and set about building his dream. His son Lou has spent a lifetime building on his father’s passion while adding his own unique style. That led to the development of the boutique winery Lou Miranda Estate, in the Barossa Valley, SA.
The building that houses our winery, cellar door and restaurant of Lou Miranda Estate has all the character of early Mediterranean architecture but was only built in 1999. It was custom-designed and built to emulate the iconic chateaus of France, aspects of our Italian heritage, and historical elements of the local region, such as our floorboards, which are jarrah and Eucalyptus hardwood from the Port Adelaide Woolstores.
Lou’s father used to say, "You can only make great wine with great fruit". This simple but effective philosophy is reflected in all that we do today, from our rigorous approach to vineyard management, consistency and discipline over fruit selection to hand crafted winemaking practices.
We believe that wine should be shared with family and friends over a meal, and offer guests this opportunity at our warm and welcoming restaurant, open for lunch 7 days a week. Our restaurant menu reflects the seasons with its modern interpretation of classic Italian cuisine. The aroma of fresh ingredients from the winery garden greets our guests as they enter the cellar door and restaurant. Local produce also features in our chef’s delectable dishes.
“Our objective is to create a unique wine experience combining traditional family elements and world-class wine making techniques,” Lou says.
How long have you been in the wine business?
Lou grew up in the wine industry as did his two daughters, Lisa and Victoria who now run Lou Miranda Estate. Lou's father 'Francesco' started a winery in Griffith, NSW in 1939. Lou remembers travelling up and down the Qld and NSW coast selling wine in his early 20s – he would load a ute full of wine (even over full) and he wouldn't come home until it was empty. Lou has seen big changes in the industry and marvels at how different the business is today. Lisa and Victoria have taken the old school values that Lou and his wife Valerie instilled in them and adapted that to a modern Australian and international market. The girls produce award-winning wines from their estate-owned vineyards that are sold around the world.
What do you value?
Family, friends and food are really important to Lou Miranda Estate. When making wine we always think about who we are going to drink it with and what food we will eat. Enjoying life and sharing special moments with family and friends are what matters most, and in the Miranda household this always revolves around the dinner table and a glass of wine.
