Brokenwood’s Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is from “the jewel in the Brokenwood crown” – the 43-year-old vineyard planted on an old cemetery that produces low-yielding, intensely flavoured fruit. The 2004 is described as a “wine of great concentration.”
An excellent colour with youthful tints, it’s reminiscent of the 1991 vintage. On the nose, charry briar wood, clove and red cherry aromas feature with some background oak and vanillin evident. There’s good weight to the palate, initially firm tannins but then red berry and spice flavours. It has excellent structure that has earthy, briary, savoury characters and grape/oak tannins.
