Brokenwood’s Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz is from “the jewel in the Brokenwood crown” – the 43-year-old vineyard planted on an old cemetery that produces low-yielding, intensely flavoured fruit. The 2005 is described as “quite the complete wine.”
Compared to the 2004 vintage, the 2005 is similar in texture and fruit weight, but with a rounder feel. It’s medium density in colour with crimson hues. Lifted aromas of dark cherry, clove and ‘sweet’ earth are complemented by soft mocha oak. Flavours of dark chocolate and plums, supported by the ripe tannins, introduce the palate, which has some spice/pepper characters on the finish. Overall, it has perfect weight of fruit, alcohol and tannin. It’s a wine with great ‘line’ – a Len Evan’s expression used to convey structure, balance and length.
