Some wines are more than just popular. They’re celebrated, revered. Hard to get, but highly sought after. Like these limited-release Chardonnays from Hunter Valley producer Tyrrell’s, one of Australia’s most highly respected winemaking families.
The Vat 47 Chardonnay represents one of Tyrrell’s flagship wines. Rich, mealy and concentrated with terrific minerality and persistence, it shows ripe stonefruit, fresh pineapple, honeydew and ginger, subtle nougat complexity and vanillin oak. This is a mouth-wateringly delicious wine with spicy acidity and complex flavour length, a demonstration of the winemaker’s skill and expertise, and a timeless style of Chardonnay.
The Old Vines Chardonnay block on the HVD vineyard was planted in 1908, and Tyrrell’s believe it to be the oldest Chardonnay vineyard in the world. It sits between two old creek beds with ideal sandy loam soils and ever-present access to underground water, and as there is no need to irrigate these vines, its fruit has increased flavour and intensity.
Youthful gold with green freshness, the HVD Old Vines Chardonnay 2018 opens with white peach, grapefruit and struck match aromas. The beautifully poised, refined and balanced palate manages to suggest latent power, yet already entices with its lovely texture, pin point acidity and beautifully judged oak. A great drink now, but will also reward with time in the cellar.
Truly, these are Chardonnays of sheer distinction, each a masterpiece from Tyrrell’s. Make them yours today, before they’re gone forever.
