Giant Steps’ Arthurs Creek vineyard in the Yarra Valley was planted in 1976, so even in a cool year like 2011, the fruit comes in with great flavour and intensity and results in beauties like this plush Chardonnay.
Giant Steps is named after John Coltrane’s first solo album and the Sexton’s ‘giant step’ from Margaret River to the Yarra Valley. Fruit for this wine was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and barrel fermented in French oak with indigenous yeasts. It was lees stirred with no malolactic fermentation, fining or filtration and minimal sulphur added.
A classic Yarra style by Steve Flamsteed, it shows perfumed aromas of nectarine, fig, peach and deluxe oak. The palate is lithe and elegant with beautifully delicate layers of ripe yet plush fruit, refined oak harmony and wonderful length, drive and persistence.
