Aylesbury Estate

Q&A with Ryan Gibbs from Aylesbury Estate

The Aylesbury Estate is steeped in history with the 22 acre vineyard a part of a family owned farm that has been passed down through five generations.

Capturing the best of the Ferguson Valley in a bottle is Ryan Gibbs from Aylesbury Estate who tells us how he started out in wine making and what's in store for the brand in the future.

How did you get into wine?

My dad had the vision to diversify our beef property in to the wine industry in the late 1990’s. I followed the path with a Uni degree and rode the wave from there!

What do you love about wine?

The way it excites people, begins conversations and brings people together!

What would be a special one of yours that you would open when friends come over?

Our QO5 Gamay – it’s a crowd pleasing cherry bomb that matches lots of food.

What do you like about your region? What are the people like?

The Geographe region has such a diverse range of sites and producers able to make any varietal and wine style from cool-climate Riesling to full bodied Cabernet and everything in between. A focus on new and alternative varieties in the region is exciting.

If you had to describe your winery or wines to people have never tried it before what would you say?

Our wines are all about the fruit. We want to express the vineyard and region without trying to outsmart ourselves! It’s all about the vineyard from start to finish!

What are you goals for the brand in the future?

To continue to express the Geographe Wine Region with alternative varieties in our QO5 range. We have a Tempranillo coming for V20!

What’s a wine you’ve produced that your most proud of and why?

Our Pater Series Chardonnay. It is an outstanding powerful reflection of Chardonnay which vindicated our decision to make this wine as a stand-alone product under our Aylesbury label. It proved to us that we had what it took to bring Aylesbury as a brand to fruition.

What do you like about working with wine selectors?

Their passion for local producers and their eye for quality.

When you need to relax and unwind and get away from the wine world, what do you do?

We are a hockey family so between playing and coaching the kids on the weekends in winter we are kept busy!

If you could go anywhere for a holiday where would it be and what would you drink there?

The Kimberley region of WA camped in the bush with my family – near a nice waterhole watching the sun go down with a glass of really good Chardonnay – doesn’t matter where in the world it’s from!
