Ironcloud Wines Rock of Solitude

IronCloud Estate calls Western Australia’s Ferguson Valley in the Geographe wine region home.

The joint effort of three friends, Geoff, Karyn and Warwick, IronCloud Estate aims to produce wines with a unique sense of terroir, drawing inspiration from the great wines of the world.

Their single vineyard estate (originally called Pepperilly) was planted in 1999 on highly prized red gravelly loam soils.

The Estate is 28 acres under vine comprising hand-tended Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Malbec, Touriga, Saparavi, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The vines are planted north to south on gently sloping hillsides to optimise their growing conditions.

West Australian Peppermint Trees line the Henty Brook, the natural water source for our vineyard. For the birds that gather in their shade, the abundant summer 'pepper' berries provide a welcome distraction from the fruit on the vines.

In just one decade, Ironcloud has won many Australian and International awards, drawing attention and strong praise from respected Australian wine writers.

IronCloud Rock of Solitude Purple Patch GSM 2019

The 2019 Purple Patch GSM is a traditional Rhone style blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. Crimson in the glass, it is vibrant and fresh on the nose, with hints of blueberry laced with violet and spice.

Palate

Juicy and round, medium bodied bright berry fruits, delicious blackberry and plum intermingled with fine lengthy tannin.

Winemaking

The 2019 Purple Patch was crushed cool for fermentation to static fermenters for eight days, peak temperature 28 degrees Celsius. Drained and pressed to French oak for maturation.

Food Pairing

Delicious with Osso Bucco.

Vintage Notes

The season for the Geographe wine region was cool and dry. The five months until the end of January had yielded little rain, about 70mm less than the same period last year. The January 2019 average temperature of 21.3 was two degrees Celsius lower than the 23.3 of 2016. Ideal weather for stunning white wines. The cooler weather also disrupted flowering and fruit set resulting in much smaller bunch sizes and high incidence of hen and chicken, especially in Chardonnay.
