Meet The Panel - PJ Charteris
Wine Selectors Tasting Panel Co-Chair, Winemaker, Wine Show Chair, and Wine Show Judge
Originally from Hamilton, New Zealand, PJ has over 30 years of winemaking experience and is one of Australia’s top wine show judges. He studied Oenology at Roseworthy in Adelaide, and spent time at Penfolds and Lindeman’s before being appointed Chief Winemaker at Hunter Valley icon Brokenwood, where worked with Iain Riggs and led the winemaking team for 12 years.
He now splits his time between wine consulting in Australia and crafting his own boutique label, Charteris Wines, in the Hunter Valley’s Pokolbin sub-region and New Zealand’s Central Otago. The timing of harvest allows him to craft small batch wines that reflect the site and season from both world class wine regions.
Wine is the most unique source of sustenance on earth. From the soil, through the grapevine to the glass, with a vintner’s mind interpreting all the inputs and permutations along the way. It’s a very special thing, so you should only drink the good stuff - PJ says.
“Wine should always be a shared experience and that goes for judging as well,” he explains “I find working with a team of judges gives you the opportunity to expand the discussion yet focus on the result. Everyone benefits – the wine drinker and the judges, and I’m thrilled that I can help facilitate that process with the Wine Selectors Tasting Panel.”
