Meet The Panel - Will Figueira

Wine Selectors Tasting Panelist and Wine Show Judge

Will’s wine journey began in Tamworth, NSW, as a Year 12 student when his rugby coach, who managed a wine store, gave him a job – it was the start of a strong wine retail education.

We had to wear long pants, a long sleeve button-up shirt, and tie every shift - says Will. It was an early introduction to wine, and I have had the bug ever since.

After a few years spent in various hospitality roles around Newcastle, Will worked as a senior buyer for Kemenys for 10 years. He then established his own wine store in Sydney, building the small business from scratch, and later worked for an online wine business.

“I had lived in Newcastle in the late 1990s playing rugby and going to university,” explains Will.” I wanted to get back there, and in 2017, the opportunity to work at Wine Selectors arose – I grabbed it with both hands.”

Since joining Wine Selectors, Will has gained even more wine knowledge and experience judging a number of wine shows across Australia.

“I’m relatively ‘late to the party’ when it comes to wine show judging, having only started about six years ago,” explains Will. “Judging, particularly at two Royal Sydney Wine Shows, has been a real honour and a privilege. It’s a massive educational experience, and I love it.”

Asking a wine show judge to name their favourite region and variety is much like asking parents to choose their most-loved child, so Will has narrowed it down to three.

“At the moment, I’m really enjoying a lot of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay,” he says. “Hunter Valley Semillon, amazingly, seems to be somehow improving year on year – it’s an astonishing variety/region combination. McLaren Vale Grenache is another favourite – it’s going to be the next super-premium variety region offering, after Tasmanian Sparkling.”

“Of course, having the opportunity to taste and enjoy loads of great wine is a major drawcard of this industry, but for me, it’s also the people I get to work with in my role at Wine Selectors – my colleagues, the talented winemakers and producers all over the country, the winery salespeople, the restaurant sommeliers, and our Members I meet at events.”
