Best Australian Shiraz wine

Shiraz is Australia's most popular red wine style. It can grow just about anywhere in the country and is enjoyed everywhere from a day at the races to a quiet dinner for two. We may have borrowed this deep, dark varietal from the French, but it has truly become part of Australia’s identity.

What does Shiraz taste like?

Shiraz tastes of Plummy, dark fruit flavours with savoury elements and beautiful medium-to-full bodied textures. Shiraz can do it all whether you prefer big and bold, medium-bodied savoury styles, or refined elegance, simply comes down to the climate and regional terroir, and the winemaker’s style as to what expression of Shiraz you are going to get.

There is nothing more Australian that Sparkling Shiraz which is only produced here in Australia.

Best Australian Shiraz regions

Australian Shiraz has been instrumental in attracting international interest to Australian wine over recent decades, in large part due to the quality of Shiraz produced in the South Australian regions of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, and the Hunter Valley of NSW. Take a closer look at these top 3 Australian Shiraz regions.

Barossa valley Shiraz

Out of all of Australia’s Shiraz-producing regions, the Barossa Valley reigns supreme. Arguably as famous as Bordeaux, some of the oldest continually producing Shiraz vines in the world are in the Barossa. Thanks to its Mediterranean-style climate and rich soils, Barossa Shiraz is celebrated for round and velvety textures and dark fruit characters of dark cherry, plum, and blackberry, with black olive, chocolate and liquorice notes. McLaren vale Shiraz

McLaren Vale can also lay claim to sensational expressions of Shiraz. With some of the most diverse grape-growing conditions in the country, producers have a broad canvas to create distinct styles of Shiraz, but they all share some key characteristics – namely, full-bodied yet elegant wines with a certain savoury, fragrant and flowery edge that sets it apart from other regions.

Hunter valley Shiraz

Considered Australia’s oldest wine regions, the Hunter Valley in NSW has been growing Shiraz since James Busby first brought the variety to Australian in 1832. Today’s Hunter Shiraz is regarded as among the worlds finest for its light to mid-weight palate and fruit-driven yet savoury characters

Shiraz wine and food matching

Shiraz is one of the tastiest, most food-friendly wines around, and is a near perfect pairing for any red meat dish you could think of. Beef in particular is the classic pairing with Shiraz. Shiraz makes a perfect pairing for any bbq style meat paired with a wide variety of spicy dishes.

Wine glass for Shiraz

Overall, Shiraz red wines are best served in larger-bowled glasses, and there are generally two red wine glass shapes - Bordeaux and Burgundy. The larger bowl of red wine glasses, allows you to not only get your nose in to smell the aromas, but it also brings more air into contact with the wine, releasing the flavours and softening the tannins.

The Bordeaux glass is great for an all-round, everyday red wine glass. The characteristic tall shape, open bowl and straight sides allow plenty of surface area for the wine to come into contact with the air, helping to tame the bold tannins of varieties like  South Australian Shiraz.

The Burgundy glass is perfect for more medium-bodied Australian Shiraz. While it's often shorter than the Bordeaux glass, it has a larger bowl, tapering to a narrower opening. This shape allows the wine to hit the tip of your tongue where more delicate flavours can be appreciated and enjoyed.
