Red wine in Australia

One of Australia’s greatest assets is its diversity and quality of red wine. Along with a vast array of red grape varietals Australia also boasts some of the best red winemaking in the world. Red wine is grown across every wine region in Australia like Barossa Valley, Margaret River, Hunter Valley and Yarra Valley. Each region delivers a different style of red wine, from robust rest wines in the warm areas to cool climate lighter gems. Australia has it all in red wine.

Types of Red Wine

We are spoilt with choice for red wine varieties in Australia. The most popular red wine which is planted in every wine region is Shiraz. Australian Shiraz is revered worldwide for its diversity of style and consistent quality. We have so many types of red wine in Australia. Enjoy a lighter style of Australian red wine in Pinot Noir or the emerging varietal of Gamay. At the other end you can find a vast array of full bodied red wines like Australian Cabernet Sauvignon especially from the Coonawarra wine region. If you enjoy Italian varietals you will find excellent quality Australian grown Italian varietals like Sangiovese or Montepulciano. If Spanish is your go to varietal you can enjoy Australian grown Spanish inspired varietals such as Tempranillo or Grenache.

Dry Red Wines and Sweet Red Wines

A dry wine is simply a wine that has no residual sugar, meaning it isn’t sweet. Below 1% sweetness, wines are considered dry. The majority of red wines are dry red wines including Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Merlot, Malbec and Grenache.

Sweet red wines (otherwise known as fortified wines), are made by altering the fermentation process. When grapes are fermented into wine, the sugar from the grape slowly converts to alcohol. By stopping this process early, grape sugar remains in the wine which makes it sweeter than other red wines. Popular sweet red wines include Port, Black Muscat, Lambrusco and Schiava.

Popular Australian Red Wine Brands

Our red wines for sale are sourced directly from the winery ensuring you get access to unique red wines. Some of the most popular red wines, revered for their quality in winemaking include:
Penfolds, Yarra Yerring, Mount Pleasant, Lindemans, Vasse Fellix and Tyrrells.

Red Wine Glasses

The best red wine glasses are larger-bowled glasses, and there are generally two red wine glass shapes – Bordeaux and Burgundy. The larger bowl of red wine glasses, allows you to not only get your nose in to smell the aromas, but it also brings more air into contact with the wine, releasing the flavours and softening the tannins.

How many calories are there in a glass of red wine?

Red wines mostly have a higher alcohol with the average around 13.5% and average calories of red wine is 115. However, like white wines, this depends on the varietal and style with Pinot Noir at around 12.50% alcohol containing about 106 calories, while Shiraz and Cabernet at 14% have approximately 122 calories.
