The word ‘chemin’ is French for ‘path’, ‘direction’ or ‘way’ signifiying the alternative approach Punt Road has taken in the production of this limited release range, allowing the wines to barrel age untouched.
From Punt Road’s oldest Chardonnay vines (planted in the late 80s), the grapes were hand harvested and two thirds was whole bunch pressed to barrel for fermentation while the remaining third was de-stemmed and fermented on skins then pressed off into barrel just before finishing ferment.
The finished wine presents lifted stonefruit, citrus, sea spray and cashew-nut oak. The rich palate has a savoury core of peachy fruit, minerally acidity, nutty oak and mouth-watering salty persistence. A lovely layer of umami adds a beautiful mouthfeel and almost shiitake mushroom-like length.
