Widely considered to be the best Hunter Valley vintage since 1965, the 2014 harvest was a year of near perfect ripeness, resulting in Shiraz of great intensity and structure – as these three wines from iconic Hunter producers demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt, yours for an incredible 56% off the RRP.
From one of the gems of the Hunter comes the Eagles Rest Shiraz 2014. Beautifully textured, plush and elegant with a bright core of black fruit, ripe and deep tannins, savoury oak and a persistent finish, it’s a lovely Shiraz that is a great choice with aged cheddar, cornichons and lavoche.
From the masterful hands of winemaker Liz Jackson, the First Creek Shiraz 2014 is a food wine par excellence. Bright, concentrated black fruits command the palate yet the wine shows fine texture and savoury complexity in excellent balance, giving velvety length – complexity that builds in the glass with hints of braised meat, fresh leather and tilled earth. A truly delicious Shiraz, made even more so when matched with mushroom and tomato ragu on rigatoni.
Lastly, the Margan Estate Grown Shiraz 2014 (valued at $50 RRP) is a real keeper. This is an excellent medium-bodied wine, full of plum and currant fruit cradled in warm cinnamon spice, with silky tannins, savoury persistence and quality oak. A wine of great length and flavour, it’s the perfect accompaniment to a hearty osso bucco.
“The Hunter’s 2014 vintage was a thing of beauty,” says our Tasting Panellist Adam Walls. “It was a once – maybe twice – in a lifetime vintage that left winemakers thrilled. The chance to squirrel away some 2014 HV Shiraz should not be overlooked.”
But hurry – at savings of $256 off the RRP for wines of this quality, these remaining dozens will quickly disappear.
