Best red wines under $25

In Australia we’re incredibly lucky that we don’t have to spend a bundle of cash for a premium red wine experience. There are plenty of good inexpensive wines from leading producers, boutique wineries, and those just getting established, that are ready and waiting for you to discover.

Whether you’re looking for an elegant and refined Pinot Noir or the mouth-filling satisfaction of a big Aussie Shiraz, it’s easier than you might think to find quality wines that punch well above their weight.

With that in mind, we asked our Will from our Wine Selector Tasting Panel to put together what he thinks is the best red wines under $25.

Each wine was individually and unanimously assessed to be of award-winning quality by our Tasting Panel. Some are ready to drink now, or, in some cases, you could also pop them away in the cellar for a couple of years for additional ageing.

Here they are, in no particular order, our best red wines under $25.

Crafted by Mark Richardson exclusively for Wine Selectors, the 2021 Dry Red 1976 Shiraz is yet another cracking Tyrrell’s red. It was made from small parcels of fruit dotted around the Hunter Valley and is a classic regional expression that’s a fruit-forward and easy-drinking style. The palate delivers very juicy and open red berry fruit in a soft, juicy, and fresh nouveau style. It’s very approachable with an excellent all-round appeal that makes it the ideal drop to enjoy with Chinese dishes like barbeque Pork bao buns. Best drinking now to 2025.

As the name suggests, the Blue Pyrenees Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 comes from Victoria’s scenic Pyrenees region where premium grapes make cracking spicy expressions such as this one. The climate is warm enough to provide concentration and power, yet cool enough to impart vibrancy and elegance.  Made by highly respected winemaker, Andrew Koerner, it was matured for 24 months in a combination of older French and American oak plus 10% tank matured with staves. The palate opens with sweet plum and dark berry fruit, showing some earth and pepper complexity, fine tannin foundation, and savoury cedar oak to finish. A classic Cabernet to enjoy with hard cheeses like cloth-aged cheddar and muscatels. Best drinking now to 2023.

A Gold medal-winner, the Jip Jip Rocks Shiraz Cabernet 2019 comes from the Bryson Family stable of wines which also includes the Mount Monster and Morambro Creek ranges. It was made by award-winning South Australian winemaker, Ben Riggs and is a classic expression of the traditional Aussie blend of Shiraz and Cabernet – a deluxe style, it’s sure to please those who love a bolder red. The palate delivers concentrated and intense plum and blackberry balancing the toasty oak, with a balanced mix of spicy Shiraz and leafy Cabernet, dry tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, persistent finish. Sensational served with a good cut of steak like a char-grilled rib-eye. Best drinking now to 2026.
