Five of the Best Cellar Doors to visit in Orange

The Orange region has well and truly established itself as a gourmet food and wine destination. Located less than four hours west of Sydney by car, it’s a foodie and wine lover’s paradise, ideal for a weekend getaway.

When it comes to winemaking, there are a number of factors that make Orange such a great region, including its elevation of 860m above sea level and associated cool climate. Additionally, the rich basalt soils from Mount Canobolas are ideal for grape growing. It’s a trifecta of conditions that have seen the region produce some outstanding Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blancs.

There are plenty of wineries to visit in Orange and below we’ve listed our top 5 picks along with an interactive map, so you can plan your cellar door visits right from your phone or desktop.

Here are our Top 5 wineries to visit in Orange.

Angullong is a one of the Orange region’s most awarded wineries. With a range of traditional and alternative varieties, this cool climate winegrower has repeatedly won acclaim with their wines.

Their attention to detail and quality is built on Angullong’s strong pastoral heritage. The Crossing family purchased the property in 1950, farming sheep and cattle and, since 1998, growing grapes.

The high elevation of the Orange region allows for long, cool ripening of the grapes that instils lovely natural acidity, which in turn supports the elegant fruit flavours.

The vineyards are situated on the fertile southern slopes of Orange at the foothills of the ancient volcano, Mount Canobolas. The cellar door is located in the nearby village of Millthorpe, in the beautiful blue stone stables on the corner of Park and Victoria Streets.

Corner Park & Victoria Street, Millthorpe
Open seven days 11am – 5pm

Cooks Lot

With a 5-star James Halliday rating, Cook Family Estate is a boutique winery producing premium cool climate wines.

Duncan Cook makes wines of distinction, complexity and elegance, exemplifying Orange terroir. Elevation is key, which is why the fruit is grown in vineyards of varying altitudes and soils.

Wines can be tasted at Ferment, the Orange Wine Centre, a modern European space in a preserved heritage building. Ferment’s state-of-the-art Enomatic wine dispenser allows you to sample a range of exceptional local wines, all of which are available for purchase. Plus, wines can be matched to cheese or salami boards.
