Seeing Green with Big Green Egg BBQs
With its simplicity, versatility and all-weather capability, your Big Green Egg will be the envy of all your barbeque-loving friends.
First recorded in use during the Chinese Qin Dynasty, clay cookers with removable domed lids were a staple across Asia for over 3,000 years thanks to their ease of use when cooking rice, in small pots hung in the inside of the dome. Arriving in Japan from China via Korea, they became known as mushikamado, or “movable stoves”, and by this time had long been used for grilling and roasting meats thanks to the insertion of a slatted grid. During the Second World War, such cookers caught the eye of American serviceman and entrepreneuer Ed Fisher, who was amazed by the flavours of food cooked in kamado cookers and began importing them back to the United States.
While these original clay cookers produced great results, they were relatively fragile, especially after exposure to the elements. Based on materials first developed by NASA for the space program, Ed refined and improved upon their material design, making them not only more durable, but also improving their heat insulation qualities. Thus was born the modern Big Green Egg, which has today become one of the most popular outdoor cookers in the world, celebrated for its versatility and ease of use.

Roast, smoke, grill and bake with a Big Green Egg
Unlike traditional gas-fuelled, metal grills, the Big Green Egg is fuelled by 100% natural lump charcoal and crafted from shuttle-quality ceramic that offers unprecedented heat and moisture retention. Temperature and smoke quantity is controlled by a patented air flow system – food is cooked with the dome lid down, preserving moisture and flavour with mouth-watering results. And there’s no shortage of what can be cooked inside the Egg, with the ability to roast, smoke, grill and bake a wealth of dishes – from masterfully seared steaks and burgers, to slow roasted ribs and legs of lamb, and even pizzas and breads.

The Big Green Egg is both beautiful and capable
Reaching cooking temperature within minutes, the Big Green Egg’s ceramic composition makes it perfect for year-round use, as external temperatures have no effect on temperatures within. Plus, thanks to its patented air flow system, it can readily maintain precise temperatures for hours at a time – ideal for slow, low cooking.
With its elegant green exterior and lifetime glaze, it’s not simply a cooker – it’s a beautiful object in its own right. Available in five sizes, from the MiniMax Egg to the 2XL Egg, there’s a Big Green Egg to suit any size yard or entertaining area, plus a host of accessories available to help you get the most from your cooker – our favourite being the Ceramic Chicken Roaster, which produces perhaps the juiciest, most flavoursome poultry to ever pass your lips, perfect for that festive roast.
