A little under four hours from Sydney in the Central Tablelands, this unassuming town started life as a convict colony. When gold was found in the nearby hills, it became a central trading area. Its suitability for agriculture also saw it thrive as an orchard town, and with the extinct volcano of Mount Canobolas (from gaahna bula in the Wiradjuri language) overseeing all, the region’s high elevations and rich, diverse soils have cemented its status as one of the country’s premier cool climate wine regions.
Rolling hills, historic buildings and a burgeoning food and hospitality scene have made it a true destination for food and wine lovers, particularly for its festivals. Nearby Bathurst, some 30 minutes away, is also experiencing a renaissance of late, and together with Orange makes for a great long weekend or roadtrip.

Angullong
The Angullong vineyard is one of the largest in the area, situated at the foothills of Mount Canobolas.
The Angullong cellar door is located in the small village of Millthorpe, in the beautiful bluestone stables.
With an attention to detail and quality stemming from its strong pastoral heritage, Angullong Wines is one of Orange region’s most awarded winemakers. The property was purchased by the Crossing family in 1950, who, after originally farming sheep and cattle, started growing grapes in 1998. The vineyard, one of the largest in the area, is situated on the fertile southern slopes of Orange, at the foothills of Mount Canobolas, while the cellar door is located in the small village of Millthorpe, in the beautiful bluestone stables on the corner of Park and Victoria Streets.

Borrodell Estate

Byrne Farm
Canadian ex-pat Jeff Byrne and his Aussie wife Bridgette made the tree-change from Hunter Valley to Orange.
Their wines, which can be tasted at the property’s lovely new cellar door, superbly express the region.
On the northern slope of Mount Canobolas just a ten-minute drive out of Orange, you’ll find Byrne Farm. At 900m altitude this special 40-acre parcel of land, referred to as ‘Glenidle Vineyard’, has the most beautiful chocolate/red ferrosol soils, perfect for growing Pinot and Chardonnay. In 2019 Canadian ex-pat Jeff Byrne and his Aussie wife Bridgette made the decision to make a ‘tree-change’ from the Hunter Valley to set up their own brand, vineyard and winery. Byrne Farm is the result. Their wines, which can be tasted at the property’s lovely new cellar door, superbly express the region. An apple and cherry orchard in the early 1900s, small orchards of cherries, figs, peaches and apples are still maintained today, much to the delight of visitors throughout the year.

Viticulturist and co-owner Charles Simonshas worked hard to ensure the wines reflect the unique qualities of Mayfield Vineyard.
The history of Mayfield Vineyard dates back to 1815 when explorer William Charles Wentworth was granted the land as a thank you for his earlier crossing of the Blue Mountains. Located on the eastern slopes of the ancient and extinct volcano, Mount Canobolas, the vineyard was planted in 1999 and purchased by the Eastham family in 2021. Under viticulturist and co-owner Charles Simons, a great deal of work has been conducted in the vineyard to ensure the new wines reflect the unique qualities of this historic property. Mayfield Vineyard cellar door is a ten-minute drive from the centre of Orange, offering guests the opportunity to taste these award-winning wines with spectacular views of the vineyards and lakes.
