Byron and Harold 2020 Vintage

Byron and Harold can be found in Western Australia amongst a small collection of wine producing regions in Australia that enjoy a genuine cool climate, due to our Southerly latitudes and strong influence of the surrounding oceans on our vineyards.

Byron and Harold are known to combine two regions in a wine, sourcing grapes from the Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions with an aim to produce high quality wines, with flavour and provenance that Australian wine lovers really want to drink.

Byron and Harold's 2020 vintage had an early start to the season, with warmer than average spring temperatures leading into perfect summer growing conditions. Low disease pressure, flowering of native trees to keep the birds away and little to no rain. The dry conditions resulted in lower than normal yields across all varieties. In turn the reds from 2020 show exceptional fruit that is physiologically ripe and display excellent concentration of aromas and flavours.

Byron and Harold's 2020 Vintage Notes

Rory Parkes, winemaker at Byron and Harold shares his notes on the new season wines.

Shiraz: " I really liked the warmth of the season, creating wines with more depth, a bright fruit spectrum and plush tannins with medium weight."

Cabernet Sauvignon: "Lots of colour and concentration, vibrant dark fruit, a powerful elegance to the fruit profile accompanied by fine soft tannins."

Rags to Riches 2020 Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon

The fruit is from southern sites in Margaret River. Being a warm year these southern sites achieved ideal ripeness whilst retaining elegance, along with distinct varietal and regional character. A period of extended time on skins helped provide structure and complexity.

Ruby red in colour. The wine shows lovely ripe fruit characters along with savoury herbal notes. It’s concentrated with integrated oak and soft fine tannins. An approachable red which over delivers on fruit quality. This medium bodied style is great value for money.

Rose and Thorns 2020 Great Southern Shiraz

The fruit is from the Byron and Harold Great Southern vineyard. Sugar ripeness accelerated fast in 2020, we held tight aiming for ideal maturity when acidity and tannin became balanced. Combine this great fruit with delicate handling and cool fermentation temperatures and the resultant wine is rich, soft and balanced.

Deep red in colour. Lifted black cherry, plum, white pepper and spice. The palate is rich with great depth of fruit, toasty oak and soft generous tannin structure.

Chapter & Verse 2020 Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon

The fruit is from the Byron and Harold Great Southern vineyard. For such a warm year the wine is vibrant with moderate alcohol, only achieved by balanced canopy management in the vineyard and minimal intervention winemaking.

Deep red. Lifted mulberry, blackberry and savoury notes. On the palate, fruits of the forest, licorice and dark cherry, its core is juicy and fresh with soft long tannins.
